Built in 1584 on the remains of the ancient parish church, it has an austere façade made in the 17th century, embellished by statues of St. Peter and two angels as well as elaborate marble columns, the two main ones of which came from the ruins of the adjacent Roman villa. The interior of the church is a veritable gallery of canvases by the illustrious Venetian painter Andrea Celesti, created between 1688 and the first decade of the 18th century, illustrating the salient episodes in the lives of Saints Peter and Paul. Andrea Celesti also frescoed the vault of the apse and chancel, which have been referred to as Celesti’s Sistine Chapel. There are numerous floor tombstones belonging to great families who played a leading role in the history of Toscolano between the 16th and 17th centuries.
