Home to a manufacturing tradition that began in the 14th century, a papermaking hub of primary importance in the territories of the Venetian Republic between the 15th and 18th centuries, and the terrain of original entrepreneurial events between the 19th and 20th centuries, the Valley of the Toscolano Maderno Paper Mills has preserved impressive evidence of its industrial past inserted within an environment that appears in striking contrast to that of the Riviera.
The charm of the valley’s landscape, characterized by steep slopes and enclosed between narrow gorges, also derives from the richness and variety of its vegetation, interspersed with the ruins and spaces of ancient industry.
A little further upstream in the Camerate valley, a group of volunteers has set up an experimental fish hatchery for the protection of biodiversity.
